Seeking Holiness

Members of the Confraternity of Our Lady of Mercy pledge to seek holiness through the following spiritual exercises (which do not oblige under pain of sin):

Daily:

  • They will wear one of the following as a reminder of the spiritual motherhood of the Blessed Virgin Mary: the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, the Green Scapular of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, or the Miraculous Medal.
  • Morning offering of themselves to Jesus through Mary, and prayer for the end of abortion.
  • Five decades of the Holy Rosary and/or 15 minutes of Lectio Divina, including all members of the Confraternity in their prayer intentions.
  • Nightly Examination of Conscience and Act of Contrition.

Weekly:

  • Participation in at least one weekday Mass (in addition to making their Sunday and Holy Day obligations).
  • One hour of Eucharistic Adoration; this could be done as a single holy hour, or as two or more shorter times of Adoration. [If it is not feasible to spend the time in Eucharistic Adoration, due to distance for a church or to churches in the area being locked most of the time, one can choose to spend one hour each week in meditation upon a crucifix or upon an icon of Our Blessed Lord.]
  • Praying of the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament, for an outpouring of Divine Mercy upon all those who are wounded by abortion and who have not yet made their peace with God.

Monthly:

  • Devoutly receiving the Sacrament of Confession, which is one of the greatest means for growing in holiness, though it is much neglected today.

Annually:

  • Making a spiritual retreat of two or more days.

Viral Retreat

At a time when many of our normal activities have been shut down, or have been modified due to the need for “social distancing,” we might be asking if things will ever “get back to normal,” or how soon they will do so. Maybe we should be asking another question: “How can I turn this […]

Lent: Why Fasting Matters

“Don’t give up chocolate for Lent. Do something else, like pray more, or do something positive.” How many of us have heard this — even from our pastors and trusted Catholic sources? The tradition of the Catholic Church is that there are three special “works” that we should engage in during Lent: prayer, fasting, and […]

Recommended book: Practical Theology

On this Feast of St. Thomas Aquinas, who is the greatest theologian in the history of the Church, we might think that his insights are beyond our reach. After all, he was a tremendously smart writer, who wrote the Summa Theologiae, which has around 4,000 articles in which he answers objections to his theology, and […]

Christ the King: Lord even in the worst times

Sometimes when we find ourselves living in times of darkness — political and social upheaval, economic uncertainty, loss of our jobs and the means to provide for our families — it can be easy to forget that Jesus Christ is still our King, and that He is ultimately in control. St. Paul tells us that […]
