Many people know that the month of June is dedicated to the Sacred Heart. But did you know that the month of July is dedicated to the Precious Blood of Jesus?
In Ancient Israel, the People of God were forbidden to ever consume blood. The reason was that the life (soul) of the animal was “in the blood.” At Passover, the blood of the lambs was put on the lintel and doorposts of the homes, and the Angel of Death passed over the homes of the Israelites. Every covenant was sealed in blood. We see this when God established the covenant with Moses and Israel at Mount Sinai.
The New and Eternal Covenant between God and man is also sealed in blood — the Precious Blood of the Eternal Son of God. When Our Lord celebrated the Last Supper, He gave us His Blood to be our spiritual drink. On Calvary, his side was pierced, and “blood and water flowed forth.” As St. Ambrose said: “For water and blood poured out – one to wash us, the other to ransom us. Come, let us drink our ransom, that by drinking it we may be redeemed.” We receive the power of the Precious Blood whenever we receive the Lord Jesus in the Holy Eucharist. May we reflect on that reality at every Mass!
As we pray this month of July, let us meditate on the power of the Precious Blood of Jesus, which has ransomed us from sin and death, and brought us into union with the Most Holy Trinity.
