Bishop Choby, a Spiritual Father to our Confraternity

June 6, 2017 by Fr. Ben Cameron Leave a Comment

Bishop David Choby, the 11th Bishop of Nashville, passed into eternal life on Saturday, June 3, 2017.  He was a true spiritual father to the Confraternity of Our Lady of Mercy.  When I first had the inspiration (during a Eucharistic Holy Hour, while preaching a Rosary Novena) to start a spiritual confraternity (a spiritual family) for those who had been wounded by abortion, but who had repented and found (or begun) healing through Our Lord Jesus Christ, Bishop Choby was one of four persons who I turned to for counsel and prayers of discernment.  Was this really from God?  Was this an inspiration from the Holy Spirit, or was it my idea?  I needed wise counsel, and, with the blessing of our Superior General, Fr. David Wilton (who was one of the other three), I submitted my thoughts and concerns to Bishop Choby.  After about a week of prayer, he got back to me and said that he believed that this is definitely from God, and something that I needed to do.

Bishop Choby was a true shepherd, a true spiritual father, and he has been a guide to me for many years with his quiet wisdom.  He will be sorely missed!  I would ask that each member of the Confraternity of Our Lady of Mercy pray for the blessed repose of his soul — if possible, please offer one rosary and one Holy Communion for Bishop Choby.  And pray for the Diocese of Nashville, that they will receive another Good Shepherd after the heart of Christ!

Reflections on Grief, following the death of my father

On October 8th of this year, I lost my father (Walter Eugene Cameron) to lung cancer. It was the second great grief of my life, the first being the death of my brother, Matthew, to lung cancer four years ago. Granted, I have felt grief at other deaths both before Matthew’s passing, and since then, […]

Special Grace of Divine Mercy Sunday

In the Diary of St. Faustina, Divine Mercy in My Soul, the Lord Jesus said that He would give special graces on the Feast of Mercy, the Octave Sunday of Easter.  On that day, Our Lord promises that those who have been to the Sacrament of Confession (and, of course, made a good confession of […]

Thoughts on the March for Life 2022

St. Helen Youth group at the Lincoln Memorial Last week, I was blessed to accompany five teenagers (and another adult chaperone) from our parish Youth Group (St. Helen, Glasgow & Our Lady of the Caves, Horse Cave, Kentucky) to the annual March for Life in Washington, DC. Due to the pandemic, it had been two […]
